Special Edition:
Disability and Neurodivergence in our Community
Brought to you by the FM Accommodations Crew & TNM
with funding made possible by Thečhíȟila Collective.
“Neurodivergent and disabled people are part of our community and are often overlooked. This issue showcases art from neurodivergent and disabled community members. (We would appreciate it if all submissions were from neurodivergent and disabled artists on all subjects accepted, submissions are encouraged to be about the disabled or ND experience.)
Artists are encouraged to identify their neurodivergence/disability if and only if they feel comfortable doing so, in order to increase awareness of specific conditions within our community.
**Neurodivergence is the term for when someone’s brain processes, learns, and/or behaves differently from what is considered “typical.” Examples: autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s, synesthesia, Down syndrome, epilepsy, and chronic mental health illnesses such as bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, dissociative disorders, anxiety, and depression”
Who are the FM Accommodations Crew?
“We work to integrate accessibility and neurodivergence activism as part of the broader struggle against capitalism, oppression, and discrimination. We focus on educating the existing activism community, taking direct action to increase accessibility, and growing community with our disabled and neurodivergent comrades. We recognize that racism and capitalism are explicitly ableist, therefore we are anti-racist and anti-capitalist.”
What do we want?
We are seeking all creative media! 2D & 3D, digital and traditional art and craft. Poetry, prose, and short essays. Film, dance, and music videos. If you made it, we’re interested!
This theme is meant to be an inspirational guide with which you may base your submission on. It is not meant to be a concrete thing to limit your work. You’re free to interpret the theme and incorporate it into your work at your own discretion. However, we are generally inclined to give preference in selecting those that address the theme, and specifically entries which come from neurodivergent and disabled folks.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please email us at:
RedRiverCreatives@gmail.com
Entries must be received by September 1st!
Extensions to the deadline allowed if advance notice is given to TNM.
Content guidelines:
We don’t like a lot of rules, but we do have some guidelines that will make this process a little more streamlined and easier for us to pull together. Please read on.
We aren’t the grammar police. We do not wish to reject a submission based on errors in grammar or punctuation, so long as a point is being made. That said, we have recently added a check box to our submission form for those that would like to request a proof reading & corrections.
Racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, ableist, or other works targeting specific groups of people will not be accepted. We understand artistic freedom and respect groups’ rights to reclaim and repurpose words that have been meant to hurt and oppress them, but bigotry will not be admissible.
Lastly! Feel free to send us information (flyers & write ups) regarding community events, educational opportunities, or other local happenings of interest.

- If you have trouble resizing/reformatting images, please reach out to us. A good, free, online image editor to use is: Photopea.com
