Honey Sesame Chicken
I think I understand why people write five page long narratives before getting to their recipes. Food is more than just what you eat. Food is about the experiences and memories we associate with each meal, like the scene at the end of Ratatouille when the critic is reminded of his childhood after taking a bite of the rat’s food. The story of a recipe is made up of many parts: where you learned it, the first time you made it, what you changed, and who you shared it with.
I’ve struggled with cooking my entire life due to a lack of both technical skill and familiarity with recipes. My family never enjoyed making food, and the meals we ate were often very simple and bland. Now that I’m an adult, I love food! I love trying new things, and I’ve learned a lot about the language of food and what makes it taste so good. My fiance makes fun of me, calling me things like a “spice snob” (it’s his fault for making me watch endless seasons of Guy’s Grocery Games!).
I still struggle with making meals, so I gravitate towards food that is simple to make. Today, I’d like to share the recipe for a meal a dear friend made for me 3 years ago: Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken. It’s an easy to prep meal that can feed around 5-6 people, and it’s absolutely delicious! I often make it for game nights or get-togethers. In fact, last time I made it, it was completely devoured before I had seconds…RIP to having leftovers.
This recipe does require a lot of ingredients, so be sure to bring a shopping list!

Editor’s note: Vegetarian? No prob! Substitute with your favorite chicken-like protein, such as firm tofu or seitan. Turn the recipe into an overnight marinade, and pan-fry or bake the veg protein as you normally would.
